Maths and English Updates

Maths
In Maths we have been learning about time and telling time on analogue clocks.  I was very impressed with the number of students who could tell time to the minute.  It would be great if you could practise some time telling at home by just asking your child what the time is on an analogue clock every now and then.  The time that most students are struggling with is 'quarter to' times.  We say quarter to 8 but in digital form it is written 7.45.  Students are finding this confusing.  Some also need to practise time to the nearest 5 minutes and time to the nearest minute.

English
We have started a new reading strategy - Questioning.  This is not where students answer questions about a text but where they form their own questions.  It can be quite difficult to do as students are used to reading and answering questions.  In this strategy students have to think of questions to ask that help them understand, remember and explain the text.  They use the headings, pictures, words and phrases to help think of questions.  They then find the answers to their questions.
