Spare Parts Play
Earlier this year Aubin Grove introduced Spare Parts Play. We have a shed full of bits and pieces and odds and sods (conveniently located outside the windows of Room 24 - no peaceful lunch time for Miss Calvert!). Students have not been using this area as much as expected so yesterday Room 24 went and have a look at what is there. After having a chat and a look, I set students the task of working in teams to make a mode of transport using their imagination and creativity. It was great to see all students engaged and working in co-operative teams, negotiating and respecting each others ideas. We did this just before lunch time and as I peered out of my classroom window I noticed a lot of my class back there at lunch time playing. If you have any bits and pieces like the ones pictured below that you would like to donate please drop them off to the school.
"What I like about building was we all got together and came up with ideas and we got to see how creative other people are." - Tom
"In the playground we built a tank which looked like junk. But still enjoyed it." - Andres
"I thought that our vehicle looked like a piece of junk that had been turned into a piece. I really loved hanging out and being creative with my friends on a scale of 1 to 10 our vehicle is a 2." - Fletcher
"The helicopter - we used a playing cube for wings, a fence for windows and a plastic thing for a steering wheel." - Jamie
"I liked building the helicopter. It was auto pilot and looked just like one." - Noah
"I really liked working together building. It was also really fun creating." - Owen
"Today the whole class had to get into teams to build a motorised vehicle. Molly, Dakota, Amelia and I built a super rocking fun time van." - Olive
"I really enjoyed making a super rocking fun time van, I think everyone else's is really good, I liked working in a team and using our imagination." - Amelia
"We made a super rocking fun time van. It runs on slushies and bubbles come out of the wheels. It's got six seats." - Dakota
"I love the SRFTV (super rocking fun time van) because it runs on Fanta and has bubbles off its wheels. It would be the best van ever!" - Molly
"I liked it because it has big wheels and it has a back seat." - Thomas
"I liked Shevin's car because it had lots of intersecting stuff on it and I liked ours." - John
"The magic school bus has a naughty corner and it has hooks and the front has a wheel and there is an air conditioner and there are toys inside." - Celina
"My school bus was so fun making all the stuff. It is for children. It is powered by rainbows." - Taylor
"I built a school bus. It is a big school bus. I enjoyed it because it had all different kinds of parts." - Emma-Lee
"I liked how we got to all have input and each idea was made part of it. Also our ideas were shared." - Caitlin
"I really loved it because it was fun an it was called the Monster Truck and I loved being creative." - Logan
"I feel happy about our group because they all helped. We made a monster truck and I like all of the people in my group because they never give up." - Shevin
"I liked my creation because it was very creative. I also liked mine because it can move when you push it." - Shaun
"I liked it. It was fun." - William

Assembly News
After last weeks close call for the Waste Free Warrior Trophy, where we missed out by only 1%, we were motivated and inspired and won this week with a whopping 80%! Thank you all for supporting this valuable initiative.
Congratulations to our Merit Certificate recipient, Tom.
Finally, congratulations to Molly who was the WA Winner of the SneezeSafe Design a Poster Competition. We did SneezeSafe in class and I handed out the competition. As it required parental permission to enter it was sent home for students to post in if they wanted to enter. Molly did this and won an iPad Mini.

Important information about the 1:1 MacBook portal
The Winthrop 1-1 MacBook portal has been closed pending the release of new computer models next Friday. They don't want students to miss out on the latest models so they have closed the portal until they can update it with the new models. We will keep parents informed as to when they open the portal. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Week 2 Notes
Students have made a great return back to school. We have started preparing for our assembly, read through the script, allocated parts and discussed costumes. There will be more information on this as we get closer to the date.
Next week we will be looking at Capacity and Volume in Maths. For this we need various sized, clean containers such as yoghurt cartons, milk cartons, jars etc. Also, we will need grocery store catalogues such as Coles, Woolworths, IGA. If you are able to help with this please send them in.
We are still missing some progress files. These were due back in Week 1 so please send them in as soon as you can.
Finally, a reminder that next Friday is a School Development Day and therefore no school for students.
